HET ERGSTE WAT IK OOIT UIT EEN WASMACHINE HEB GEHAALD, KWAM UIT EEN HUIS MET HONDEN.

Het was geen verstopping. Het was geen kalkaanslag.

En het verklaart waarom haar kleren maandenlang naar natte hond hadden geroken, hoe vaak ze ze ook opnieuw waste.

 

Ik weet al hoe je wasmachine ruikt voordat ik zelfs maar het deurtje open.

Een vrouw in Utrecht. Twee honden, een voorlader van een jaar of vijf oud, en een wasmachine die midden in het programma was gestopt met afpompen.

Ik knielde neer, opende het filterluikje onderaan de machine, en liet het stilstaande water in een bak lopen.

 

Het kwam er bruin uit.

 

Niet een beetje verkleurd, écht bruin.

 

Als oude thee die in de zon had staan trekken.

Ze staarde ernaar. "Heeft dát onze kleren aangeraakt?"

 

Elk programma. 

 

Elke was.

 

Dat water blijft tussen de wasbeurten in de machine staan en alles wat ze erin stopt ligt eigenlijk te marineren.

 

Toen trok ik de machine bij de muur vandaan en kwam ik bij de rubberen manchet, die dikke afdichting rond de deur.

Hoe kan dit nou?"

Ze zag eruit als iemand die net te horen had gekregen dat het huis dat ze elk weekend van boven tot onder schrobde, al die tijd iets achter de muren had verstopt gehouden.

Maar de hare bleef bij me hangen.

 

Want ze had alles goed gedaan en tóch zag de binnenkant van haar machine eruit alsof het uit een horrorfilm kwam.

WAT IK HAAR TOEN VERTELDE

Als je iets wast waar hondenharen op zitten, dan spoelen die haren niet weg zoals vuil.

Je weet wel wat er gebeurt als er haar in je doucheputje terechtkomt.
